"My name is Milanis. I am 12 years old and I am in the 7th grade. When I was in 1st grade I had trouble reading. As my grades began to fall, my mother started to worry, but she didn’t know how to help me. My parents asked my principal if she knew of an organization that would help raise my grades. My principal Mrs. Daley suggested the Cardinal Shehan Center. She said she knew it had an after school program that enriched lives through learning and had a great tutoring program. Shortly after that I began the after school program at the Shehan Center. I had a great counselor named Connie that took the time to go over and explain my assignments at my own pace. She was very patient and kind. My grades went from C’s and D’s to A’s and B’s. I still go to tutoring at the Shehan Center every day."

"The most meaningful part of my Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) experience was the opportunity to meet people who have grown up in a much different environment than me and to see, by comparison, how much I have been blessed in my own life."

"I started my journey at the Cardinal Shehan Center when I was in the 4th grade and I am still there as a volunteer and former Board of Directors member. I attended camp until I was old enough to become a junior camp counselor. The late George Fasolo gave me my first job as he was the Executive Director back then. My children were both members of the Center. The Center continues to be a safe environment providing positive educational and recreational activities for youth by a caring staff."

    Dear Ms. Gibbons,

I wanted to thank you for hosting me this summer at the Cardinal Shehan Center. The internship provided me with experiences that have shifted my mindset for the better. I really enjoyed working with the children as a chaperone and it was interesting getting to know them. My favorite part of the internship was working together with the other counselors to support the children and to watch out for hazardous behaviors. I also learned a lot about patience and organization while leading the children. These skills have already helped me grow as a person and I know they will come into play throughout college.

I really appreciated you taking the time to host me as an intern and for welcoming me into the team.

    Sincerely,

    Nicholas Martinez

“Along with playing games and channeling my inner artist, I have also been a proud member of the Robotics club. This activity came to the Shehan Center two years ago, and throughout that time I have learned how to build a robot and program it to move and make sounds by command. My introduction to Robotics has inspired me to study biology and physics in college.” -Samuel Alvarez, 7 year member of the Cardinal Shehan Center and an After & Saturday Program participant

"The Cardinal Shehan Center has always been a place to provide for those who could not provide for themselves. The Cardinal Shehan Center has been like a second home to me for the past nine years. I have made so many friends, and have built relationships with the staff members there. The staff are not only the people in charge but they have become more like friends and family throughout the years. I only have a few months left in the after school program, i am looking forward to continuing at the Shehan Center as a Counselor in training this summer. Next year I will be attending high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden. I feel like the Shehan Center has provided me with the skills to be successful in high school, and while it will be bittersweet to no longer be a camper here, I am so grateful for everything that the Shehan Center has brought to my life!" Elisha Telfort - 9 year member of the Cardinal Shehan Center and an After & Saturday Program participant; AND 3rd out of 3 to grow through the Shehan Center.
